Are there martial arts classes for 3-year-olds in Somerville or near Boston?
Yes. Brazilian Martial Arts Center (BMAC), at 700 Mystic Avenue in Somerville, runs Brazilian jiu-jitsu classes for ages 3 to 5 on Monday and Wednesday at 5pm and Saturday at 10:15am, and the first class is free. BMAC has been family-owned in Somerville since 2001.
The preschool class teaches simple jiu-jitsu movements that build coordination, listening and confidence. Jiu-jitsu suits this age because it's about balance, rolling and holding positions, with no striking.
Class times for ages 3 to 5:
- Monday and Wednesday at 5pm
- Saturday at 10:15am
Kids classes are taught by Alex Marshall, who holds a degree in physical education and is CPR/AED certified, and Nate Oses, who grew up training at BMAC and went on to win a world championship.
At 6, kids can move up to BMAC's jiu-jitsu, karate or Muay Thai classes for older children.
Parents are welcome to watch the trial class and every class after it.
