In 2008, I had the unique privilege of being featured in The New York Times for my involvement with Winchester High School's Mixed Martial Arts Club. It was an honor to be invited as a guest instructor and to support my student, In-Goo Kwak, who had the vision and dedication to bring this club to life.

The article, written by Justin Porter, captured the essence of what makes martial arts such a powerful tool for youth development. At Winchester, we weren’t just teaching punches and takedowns—we were creating a safe space for students who didn’t feel at home in traditional sports. The club allowed them to express themselves, build confidence, and develop real discipline.
As I shared with the Times back then, many people view MMA as too violent. But once you step onto the mat and see the focus, respect, and control that real training instills, you understand it’s not about violence—it’s about channeling energy and learning to grow through challenge.

I’m thankful to The New York Times for shining a light on this incredible movement and to In-Goo for letting me be part of his journey. We need more programs like this that embrace all kids, no matter their background or athletic ability.
