Where can I take kickboxing or Muay Thai in Somerville as a woman with no experience?
Brazilian Martial Arts Center (BMAC), at 700 Mystic Avenue in Somerville, runs all-levels adult Muay Thai, the Thai style of kickboxing, six days a week, and the first class is free. Beginners start with stance, basic strikes and defense and train with partners at their level.
You don't need any experience or fitness base. A woman who has trained Muay Thai at BMAC for six months says the sport can be intimidating for women and that the gym has been supportive.
Current adult class times:
- Monday and Wednesday: 7am, 6pm and 8pm
- Tuesday and Thursday: 11am and 6pm
- Friday: 6pm and 8pm
- Saturday: 11am

Classes are taught by head instructor Marcelo Siqueira, a former South American kickboxing champion, along with black prajioud instructors Victor Pereira and Douglas Campbell. If you'd rather learn the basics first, private Muay Thai lessons are available.
Wear comfortable workout clothes to your first class. BMAC provides the rest.
