I just moved to Somerville and have a BJJ belt. Which gyms nearby have open mats?

Brazilian Martial Arts Center (BMAC), at 700 Mystic Avenue in Somerville, holds an open mat on Sunday at 11am and runs Gi and No-Gi classes Monday through Saturday. Experienced grapplers can try a class free, and BMAC has five BJJ black belts on staff.

BMAC competes as BMAC / GF Team Boston at IBJJF tournaments, and its athletes have won at least 47 IBJJF and NAGA medals since 2013, including 19 golds. Instructors Karim Hallab and Alex Marshall still medal as black belts.

Current class times:

  • Gi: Monday and Wednesday at 11am and 7pm, Tuesday and Thursday at 5pm, Friday at 7pm, Saturday at 12pm
  • No-Gi: Tuesday and Thursday at 7pm, Friday at 11am
  • Women's Gi class: Thursday at 7pm
  • Open mat: Sunday at 11am
